Weezer - Memories [Track.]
Memories is the first song to be released from the upcoming Weezer album, Hurley (hence the album cover, which is a picture of the warm and cuddley face of Hurley, the fat bloke from Lost), set to be released on INDIE LABEL (OMG.) Epitaph records. Set for release on 13th September this year.
Now then, on with the pros!
First off, this song arrived to me through a youtube video, which just had the image of the new album cover with the song playing over it, and because of that, that’s a pro to me. Fantastic album cover, I could even say that is slightly better than the jumping dog Weezer had for their last album, Raditude.
Back onto the song, it is a lot more RAWK! and more distorted than pretty much the whole of the Raditude album, I’m glad about this because it brings back memories (ahuh huh) of Buddy Holly, Say In Ain’t So, Island In The Sun, the more heavier singles that Weezer have released in the past, now compare that list of singles to the more keyboard amped and dancier singles of Can’t Stop Partying and I’m Your Daddy, I think we have a pretty clear winning list.
Another thing that I liked about Memories is when Rivers’ voice comes in with the song, so much energy and just astonishing badass penetrates through a barrier that I thought Weezer had gained after releasing the single “Can’t Stop Partying” I’m glad that Weezer still possess that side of them, which may have something to do from Rivers apparently being back on the guitar once again, so that hopefully means the demise of Rivers’ dad dances in live performances.
Finally, another pro is that it is very catchy, I’ve listened to the song just a few times since it was released and I have the chorus in my head, which is something a song should do. It also reminds me of a modern day equivalent of Buddy Holly, which is what it’s meant to sound like on account of the song being about…well…memories.
Problems with the song that I have is, actually not the song itself, but Hurley will become the 3rd album that Weezer have released in 3 years, which I think isn’t a good idea. I think that Weezer should have waited another year so that more ideas can start flowing and perhaps enhance the songs that will appear on the new album, but I’m sure Weezer are at a stage of their careers where they don’t care what happens, they’ll just go for it, and the fact that this is their EIGHTH STUDIO ALBUM proves this.
Another problem I have is that this could possibly be another one of those “First single good, rest of album bad.” Which I feel happened with Raditude, (If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To was the first single released from Raditude, and it was a fun, catchy, back to Weezer’s good roots song, but then came the album itself, and oh my, it sucked.
However, Memories does leave me wanting to hear more from Weezer, so I shall wait patiently for this release and hope it blows me away, obviously without my Blue album and Pinkerton comparing caps on.
The track listing for Hurley is:
- Ruling Me
- Where’s My Sex?
- Run Away
- Hang On
- Smart Girls
- Brave New World
- Time Flies
With “All My Friends Are Insects” “Viva La Vida” and “I Want To Be Something” to be added with the deluxe edition of Hurley, set to be released on the same date as the standard edition.
Hoping Viva La Vida isn’t some kind of dodgy Coldplay cover, urgh.
