Every now and then I get a nice surprise when it comes to music. Today was one of those times, looking through a Wikipedia article on upcoming albums and I find that one of my favourite bands has an album coming out next month that I didn't even know about!
That band is Silversun Pickups, well known in the music world for producing dreamy shoegaze soundscapes that also have the balls to punch you off your feet at times. In their new single Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings), the band have gone more in the soundscape direction.
It's not the most hard-hitting of tracks, but on the third or fourth listen you suddenly realise how good a song the Pickups have come out with, channeling M83 and the Pixies before adding their own certain brand of frantic instrumentalism. Given the quality of their previous two albums, they can be excused for going in a slightly different direction here, but nevertheless the Pickups stay close to their trademark "fuzzy", ambient sound that they have done so well in the past.
Silversun Pickups' third album Neck Of The Woods is out May 8, and Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings), the first single from it, is available now on iTunes, or streaming below:
