Collateral
is a song by London/Oxford/Lithuania trio Until The Bird of the Soul Takes
Flight from the Cage of the Body to Consort with the Nightingales of the
Everlasting Garden (we’ll just call them Until The Bird… for now). It is the
very quirky and very sweet track from Until The Bird…’s upcoming debut Dwelling EP, and well, it’s certainly
something you can’t easily forget.
Featuring a ukulele riff
so dreary and so…odd, Collateral
begins to sound like one of the those creepy fairytale nursery rhymes that
instantly become uneasy in every horror film ever. It’s so different that it’s
kind of difficult to know just where Until The Bird… is going to take it, but
once the heartfelt vocals and violin/brass instruments join in, Collateral actually becomes kind
of…sweet.
The ukulele fortunately
doesn’t take up too much space, making it unable to overwhelm any of the
trombone, violin and other instruments which make an appearance or two here.
The abstractness of the lyrics also fit in well with the out there
instrumentation so it only adds to the sweetness this track displays, the same
way Jeff Mangum made semen stain the mountaintops and eating tomatoes and radio
wire sound okay.
Until The Bird…has made a
very sweet number out of Collateral,
which is something that could not have been easy considering the not-so
standard instrumentation. But still these guys have pulled out a very memorable
and wonderful track, and I can’t wait to hear how the rest of the band’s Dwelling EP sounds.
