Flume is
the electronic R&B project of 21 year old Harley Streten, and its self
titled debut album has seen huge success already. With two singles topping
various charts, and the album debuting at #1 in the Australian iTunes chart, I
think it’s pretty clear to say that Harley’s doing something right. With a wide
array of sounds, beats and collaboration at his hands, Flume creates some hard
hitting timeless classics on this record, many of which will be played
throughout the rest of this year, and well into the next.
The
opening track Sintra sets things off by introducing the listener to the beat
driven, not entirely radio friendly sound that bares some similarities with
those on the Brainfeeder label. What follows on is a record intent on bringing
the listener the idea that Flume can experiment with all kinds of directions
and moods with this sound, and pull them off effectively. Whether it’s the
slightly relaxed sound of Left Alone or Space Cadet, or the high octane
ballbuster of On Top, its pretty much more than enough evidence that Flume can
indeed make anything sound good.
