In the last couple of
months Yeah Yeah Yeahs have been playing mind tricks on their fans. Since
re-emerging to play the tiniest of comeback shows the three-piece have been
posting the occasional teaser videos for new album Mosquito which barely
provided anything than the notion that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have come back mentally
insane. Finally they let go of a new track and we now have Sacrilege to
love/hate and judge how good Mosquito’s going to be.
With Karen O professing
her love for an angel fallen from heaven over the bass-only intro it’s crazy to
think that this is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, considering how they’re responsible for
releasing the overly straight forward Show Your Bones and the pop masterpiece
that is It’s Blitz they’ve taken things into a shift of weird, and I like it.
Sacrilege’s infectious
synth riff retains a lot of the reasons why Yeah Yeah Yeahs have remained a pop
band for the last decade, however it seems that now they’ve decided to put in
as much personality in it as possible before it becomes the “that guy” of the
friendship group. It’s ridiculously ambitious and the legit gospel choir outro
makes for one of the more varied songs of 2013, and I hope that the Yeah Yeah
Yeahs saved at least a little bit of it left for the rest of Mosquito. Check
out the audio for Sacrilege below, and look out for Mosquito on April 15th.
